How To: Buy iPhone 4 in India

Some of my friends asked me they wanted to buy an iPhone 4, how to buy an iPhone 4 in India? This howto should answer that, and the same method can also be used to buy an product from US.

Buy Apple iPhone 4

The best way to get an iPhone 4 would be to ask a friend in US (who is visiting India) to buy it and bring it when he visits India.

Second best way would be to ask him/her to buy it and ship to India.

A contract-free iPhone 4 is $599 + $50 (sales tax) + $50 (USPS shipping) + import duty

Import duty can be from 4% to an unknown percentage. They customs officer may impose the duty based on his own outrageous valuation instead of the declared value. Last time I imported a product worth $700, but the officer imposed the duty based on a valuation of Rs. 62,000 ($1400). He did not consider the invoice of the product while valuation. Moreover, the actual cost of the product in India is Rs. 49,900 ($1100).

Microsoft Office 2007 on Ubuntu Linux

Installed Micrsoft Office 2007 on Ubuntu Linux 8.04 using CrossOver. It runs great, here is a screenshot:

Micrsoft Office 2007 running on Linux

But one little problem, the fonts don’t look smooth because Linux don’t have ClearType and the spacing of text is not appropriate. The text looks very crumbled and unreadable. But I am sure, there must be a solution using custom font definations.

I will also try installing it using Wine and post a HowTo on LinuxArticles.

Movie: Jumper

I am going to see a new movie based on the 1992 science fiction novel Jumper by Steven Gould. Jumper comes from the makers of one of my favorite movie, Bourne Identity. The plot and trailer of the movie looks interesting and I have expectations similar to Bourne series from this movie. I saw Jodha Akbar earlier this week, it was a good movie but not very entertaining.

Aaj Takk Breaking News!

It is not surprising to see Desi News channels pouring stupid masala on the name of breaking news. Channels like Aaj Takk and India TV show very poor content like the following screen shot. Sometimes they also rip off a video of a monkey dancing from YouTube, claim it as their own work and show a hour long dedicated prime time show about it.

Is Mumbai really so cool and safe?

This is for all those advocating about Mumbai being the coolest city in India. Can I hear that thing again? I am disgusted at the thamasha that Mumbaikars have been doing on since last 10 days. Who gave these Thackeray’s a right to violate Human Rights and beat people?

Why there is no revolt or resistance against the vandalism of Thackeray’s from all you so called cool Mumbaikars? It seems like you want to continue kissing ass of Thackeray all your life.

You claim Mumbai as the safest and coolest place in India. Is this why you form up a mob of 50+ and molest girls? Is this why you spread violence all over the state and beat poor people on the basis of regionalism?

Hypocrite Indians are the most racist people in the world. Shilpa and Harbhajan are not the victims of racism, Racism is what is going on in Mumbai right now.

If you have answer of any of my questions. Feel free to leave a comment.

Sending Bank Wire from India is a pain

Sending a Bank Wire from India to another country is pain. I have been doing a lot of documentation for it and already visited CitiBank twice. They require me to make couple of more visits, more documentation and a certification from my Charted Accountant. Moreover, my bank is not even sure if they will be able to process the bank wire after all these hassles.
